Formulations based on aluminium phosphide (AlP) are the most used products for the control of pests in storage spaces, as well as rodents and other outdoor vertebrates.
Aluminium phosphide (Phostoxin) is created by the fusion of aluminium and red or yellow phosphorus. When in contact with ambient air and humidity, the very efficient phosphine gas is developed and released.
Pellets contain 56-57% aluminium phosphide as active substance and 43-44% inert components, mainly ammonium carbamate amongst others, that facilitate controlled outgassing of phosphine.
One pellet has a weight of 0.6 g and releases 0.2 g phosphine gas.
Round Tablets contain 56-57% aluminium phosphide as active substance and 43-44% inert components, mainly ammonium carbamate amongst others, that facilitate controlled outgassing of phosphine.
One round tablet has a weight of 3 g and releases 1 g phosphine gas.
Sachet and chain products contain 57% aluminium phosphide as the active substance and inert components that facilitate controlled outgassing of phosphine. This formulation does not contain ammonium carbamate.
The formulation has been integrated into a special bag material (Tyvek) characterized by high levels of strength and elasticity. The Tyvek bag is only permeable to water vapour and phosphine and is practically impermeable to water in the liquid state.
One sachet weighs 34 g and releases 11.3 g phosphine gas (see packaging for further information).
UN-approved aluminium flasks in different flask sizes with specially sealed aluminium lid and plastic screw cap.
90/100 g, 250/300 g, 1,000 g net
The Tyvek bags are packed in gas-tight aluminium foil pouches of different sizes, depending on the no. of bags, and are finally packed in UN-approved metal drums for transportation and storage.
Per aluminium foil pouch we offer pack sizes of one single bag of 34 g up to the so-called Bag Blankets (rolls of 100 bags of 34 g). Pack sizes can be provided in single bags and bags in chains, belts and blankets.
The outgassing of the pellets and round tablets begins after a short delay once the fumigant comes into contact with the product or ambient moisture. The outgassing rate depends on temperature and humidity levels.
The smaller dimensions of the pellets lead to somehow more rapid outgassing compared to tablets.
All developmental stages of stored product pests, as well as outdoor rodents use, can be controlled with phosphine.
The highly potent gas penetrates the commodities, as well as the ones which are densely packed and nearly all packaging materials.
Since phosphine reacts with noble metals such as silver, gold, copper and their compounds, these substances must be provided with sufficient protection during fumigation.
Use of pellets and round tablets is not restricted to certain storage types as long as the storage unit can be made appropriately gas-tight. They are used in silos, on ships, in warehouses, containers, etc. and can be placed in the commodity to be treated manually or by using the Detia Degesch Automatic Dispenser.
The bag material means additional control on the outgassing rate, this means that Tyvek bags must never be opened during use. Time-delayed outgassing of phosphine begins as soon as the bags are removed from the aluminium foil pouch, and the fumigant has come into contact with the product or ambient moisture. The outgassing rate depends on temperature and humidity levels.
This ensures additional safety for the fumigation personnel.

Single bags are particularly well-suited to fumigate a lot of venues in different sizes, from small spaces (single bags) to large venues such as ships, silos, flat storages, railcars, empty storages, etc., as long as the storage unit can be made appropriately gas-tight.
The bags can be applied directly into grains or other goods, during filling of silo cells. In such cases, they must be removed when the silo cells are emptied.
Due to the fact that no ammonium carbamate is used as an inert component, the bags are suitable for the treatment of sensitive goods like cocoa, tobacco, spices, tea, etc.
The specialised packaging of this formulation avoids the direct contamination of fumigated goods by phosphide residues.
Phosphine is also highly toxic to humans and warm-blooded animals. It is therefore absolutely necessary to comply with the relevant safety measures. To raise the level of safety when the products are applied, special components have been included in the formulations to delay outgassing. The safety of Degesch fumigants is further optimised by the simplicity of their application. The products may only be used by a Registered fumigator registered under Act 36 of 1947.
