Due to their characteristics, formulations based on magnesium phosphide (Mg3P2), are the fumigant of choice for quick fumigations even under suboptimal conditions.
Mg3P2 is created by the fusion of magnesium and yellow phosphorus. When in contact with ambient air and humidity, the very efficient phosphine gas is developed and released.
Round Tablets contain 66% inert magnesium phosphide as active substance and 34% inert components, mainly ammonium carbamate amongst others that facilitate controlled outgassing of phosphine.
One round tablet has a weight of 3 g and releases 1 g phosphine gas.
Pellets contain 66% inert magnesium phosphide as active substance and 34% inert components, mainly ammonium carbamate amongst others that facilitate controlled outgassing of phosphine.
One pellet has a weight of 0.6 g and releases 0.2 g phosphine gas.
Plates and strips contain 56% magnesium phosphide as active substance and inert components that facilitate controlled outgassing of phosphine. This formulation does not contain ammonium carbamate.
The formulation is integrated in a flexible plastic matrix, coated with special paper that is permeable to water vapour.
One plate has a weight of 117 g and releases 33 g phosphine gas.
One strip contains 20 Plates in a chain/strip, has a weight of 2,340 g and releases 660 g phosphine gas.
UN-approved aluminium flasks in different flask sizes with specially sealed aluminium lid and plastic screw cap.
900g net (300 tablets)
The plates/strips are packed in gas-tight aluminium foil pouches and are finally packed in UN-approved metal drums for transportation and storage.
120 plates á 117 g or 6 strips ea. 2,340 g per drum.
The outgassing of the pellets and round tablets begins after a short delay once the fumigant gets into contact with the product or ambient moisture. The outgassing rate depends on temperature and humidity levels.
The smaller dimensions of the pellets lead to somehow more rapid outgassing compared to tablets.
All developmental stages of stored product pests can be controlled with phosphine.
The highly potent gas penetrates quickly into the commodities, as well as the ones which are densely packed and nearly all packaging materials.
Magnesium Phosphide degasses quicker than aluminium phosphide. The max. phosphine concentration can be reached already after 24 to 36 hours. Compared to this aluminium, phosphide containing fumigants are degassed in the same time to the extent of approximately 72 % (at 60 % rel. humidity and 20° C).
Since phosphine reacts with noble metals such as silver, gold, copper and their compounds, these substances must be provided with sufficient protection during fumigation.
Use of pellets and round tablets is not restricted to certain storage types as long as the storage unit can be made appropriately gas-tight. They are used in silos, on ships, in warehouses, containers, etc. and can be placed in the commodity to be treated manually or by using the Detia Degesch Automatic Dispenser.
In addition to this, and opposite to aluminium phosphide containing fumigants, dust residues of these pellets and round tablets contain practically contain a practically lower percentage of non-degassed metal phosphides.
The material enables additional control on the outgassing rate, and the special paper with the matrix must never be opened during use. Time-delayed outgassing of phosphine begins as soon as the plates/strips are removed from the aluminium foil pouch and gets into contact with the product or ambient moisture. The outgassing rate depends on temperature and humidity levels.
This ensures additional safety for the fumigation personnel.

Phosphine is also highly toxic to humans and warm-blooded animals. It is therefore absolutely necessary to comply with the relevant safety measures. To raise the level of safety when the products are applied, special components have been included in the formulation to delay outgassing. The safety of Detia Degesch fumigants is further optimized by the simplicity of their application. The products may only be used by specially trained personnel or under their supervision and always by following country-specific regulations/legislations.
